PNG Trip Update Part 3 – Awana and Religious Instruction Classes

Awana clubbers during handbook time.

Awana Clubs and Religious Instruction Classes

We have been Awana leaders/directors for the past 13 years at our home church, Bethesda Baptist in Brownsburg Indiana. Jan has been a leader in the 3rd-4th grade T&T girls group. Phil has been a leader and director of the 5th-6th grade T&T boys group. We both have been co-directors of the Jr. and Sr. High 24/7 group. Our 2 children Andrew and Lauren both have completed the highest achievement for the Awana program, the Citation Award. As you can tell we love Awana. God’s Word is taught, relationships are built, children accept Christ, and families are changed.

We were overjoyed to learn that we will be involved in the Awana program in PNG. Not just with one club, but with multiple clubs as we train volunteers in churches to start and run their own Awana programs. What a blessing! II Timothy 2:15 tells us to, “do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” There is no greater joy than to be a worker for the kingdom of God, helping others to rightly handle the truth of God. We look forward to being involved in the training of others to serve Him and help reach the boys and girls of PNG  with the gospel of Christ.

Not only will we be teaching in the Awana clubs in churches, but we will also be teaching Religious Instruction (RI) in the public schools. The RI classes are optional for the students to attend. We had the opportunity to observe an RI class the first day we were in Goroka. The following week we were able to teach the classes. This particular school was an international school and the students spoke English. Jan taught the children aged 7-9, and Phil taught the children aged 10-14. What a blessing it is to see the children come to the RI class and participate.

We are very thankful for God’s provision through God’s people in providing for us in prayer and finances. We have had several new partners and we are quickly approaching the 50% mark at which point we are eligible to return to ABWE headquarters for our next set of training sessions. We ask that you would pray to see if God would be leading you to pray for us and possibly support us financially as we seek to serve Him by reaching the lost in PNG.
